Study: How Digital Health Coaching Can Help Type 2 Diabetes Management

In a study of 40 people with type 2 diabetes, researchers sought to understand if digital health coaching would help people better manage their diabetes—specifically as it relates to controlling their glucose levels.

The control group received standard face-to-face care and follow-up phone calls as needed. The intervention group received care through the cloud-based diabetes management program—the early version of the Fitbit Health Solutions health coaching platform (formerly known as Twine Health). The interventions consisted of regular communications about glycemic control, insulin doses conducted via patient self-tracking tools, shared decision-making interfaces, secure text messages, and virtual “visits” with caregivers.

After 3 months, researchers saw meaningful health outcomes in the intervention group compared to the control group.
