Latest Findings From the 2018 PwC Health And Well-Being Touchstone Survey

In the 11th annual PwC Health and Well-being Touchstone Survey, PwC looked at health and benefits trends across 900 employers. Some themes? Managing healthcare costs continue to be a pain point for employers, and employees seem to value a holistic rewards approach in their employers.

More highlights below.

From employers:

    • Managing stress and preventing burnout is the top challenge to employers’ people strategy.
    • Employers see compensation and medical benefits as the top two workplace attributes that attract employees to their company..
    • 51% of employers offer reduced hours for flexibility, up from 27% in 2017.
    • In fact, this increased flexibility may substitute for PTO. 94% of employers are not making changes to their PTO policies, and 41% do not allow carryover.
    • 28% are interested in offering social well-being programs.
    • 24% are interested in offering stress management and weight management.
    • More employers are also looking to engage their millennial workforce. Over one-quarter of mid-size and larger employers plan to offer student loan repayments.

About employees:

    • Contrary to employers thinking the top workplace attributes that attract employees, it seems employees care more about a holistic rewards approach. 83% of highly engaged employees value diversity and core values. 83% value company mission. And 80% value flexibility as well as learning and mentoring opportunities.

In health plan offerings:

    • Employers expect medical cost increases of about 6.2% in 2018.
    • Small employers (with under 1,000 employees) are expecting the highest medical cost increases. They will have an average net cost of $10.5K, compared with $9.3K for employers with 5,000+ employees.
    • PPOs and HDHPs remain popular: Of employers offering only one health insurance plan, 51% offer a PPO. HDHPs are more prevalent with employers who offer multiple plans, and are the highest-enrolled plan (37%) for employers.
    • Employers are adding plan elements to better manage care. Well more than half of employers offer care management, telemedicine and a 24-hour nurse line.
